Gyokuro is a premium Japanese green tea made from the first spring harvest. The young tea leaves are shaded from sunlight for more than 20 days before harvest, allowing them to develop high levels of theanine, the amino acid responsible for the tea’s rich umami flavor.
This shading process creates a deep, refined sweetness and a smooth, savory character that is unique to gyokuro.
To fully appreciate its delicate umami, it is recommended to brew gyokuro with lower-temperature water, which prevents bitterness and highlights its natural sweetness.
